The Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974) wrote the 'Sonata da Chiesa' in its original version for viola d’amore and organ in 1938, a time in his career when he realized his true individual style, embracing the chromaticism of twelve-tone serialism while maintaining a tonal hierarchy in his music. Three years later, he arranged the Sonata for flute (and organ).

Katalin Remitzky and Lars David Kellner recently performed this work in concert at Mariä Sieben Schmerzen, Haar / Munich.

In 1886, the young Sergei Rachmaninoff was taken by his teacher Nikolai Zverev to Crimea, where Rachmaninoff continued his musical studies, hoping to gain entrance into Anton Arensky's harmony class at the Moscow Conservatory. It was during this time that Rachmaninoff created his first composition, a two-page »Étude« in F-sharp Major, the manuscript of which is unfortunately now lost. After admission to the class, he produced ten »Exercises« in 1887, the earliest of which was a 'Song without Words' (alias 'Lento in D minor'). It is this piece, written by the fourteen year old Rachmaninoff, that Tshaikovsky truly enjoyed at Rachmaninoff's last examination in Moscow. Unfortunately, the original autographs of these ten pieces are also lost.
Nevertheless, we can find an authorial manuscript of the first piece of the »Exercises« printed as a facsimile in Oskar von Riesemann's book »Rachmaninov's recollections« (Macmillan Co., 1934). At Riesemann's request the composer has written it down from memory, this even after more than forty years had passed, in the autumn of 1931.
The autograph is titled just as 'Lento', written on a single page and marked with the composer's initials. There is no indication for the instrumentation of the piece and there are no pedal signs.
Until today, the 'Song without Words' has been recorded on piano only. Due to the setting of the piece with its manually sustained bass notes it is also suitable for a performance on harmonium.

Lars David Kellner plays Rachmaninoff's 'Lento in D minor' on a concert harmonium with suction system (Max Horn, model 'Tannhäuser'). This can be considered as a premiere recording on that type of instrument.

Unlike his French colleagues, Sigrid Karg-Elert wrote a number of compositions explicitly to be performed on a harmonium with suction system. In some other pieces, Karg-Elert wrote additional notes for instruments with suction as well as pressure systems, so that the performer has a free choice of instruments. However, in order to achieve the composer's distinctive sound language, it is obligatory for the artist to abide by the detailed registration indications by Karg-Elert.
Few recordings of some numbers from his composition »Consolations« op. 47 have currently been made, but - contrary to the composer´s indication - all on organ, an instrument which gives Karg-Elert's music a quite different sound. Lars David Kellner herein presents three numbers from this opus in original cast as a premiere recording.

»Weihnachtsbaum« (English: »Christmas Tree« ; French: »Arbre de Noël«) is a suite of 12 pieces written by Franz Liszt in 1873–76, with revisions in 1881. The suite exists in versions for solo piano and piano four-hands. The work has been described as a distant relation of Schumann's »Kinderszenen« and Debussy's »Children's Corner«. It occupies an unusual place in Liszt's output, and it may be for these reasons that it has received relatively little attention from performers. (freely based on wikipedia)

Rachmaninoff's »14 Songs without Opus Number«

'Prayer' / 'Gebet' was written along with another sacred song in 1916. They are dedicated to Nina Koshetz, a singer with whom Rachmaninoff appeared in concert. In his song (Russian text by Konstantin Romanov), Rachmaninoff again reveals a more liberal attitude toward tonality. The piece's harmonic ambivalence projects an underlying mood of mysticism.

Rachmaninovs »Trio elegiaque« op. 9 – a trio for four!

Rachmaninov's second piano trio was first published by Gutheil in 1893. In this original edition the composer´s intention was to introduce the main theme of the second movement with a harmonium solo. In his later revisions of the Trio (1907 & 1917) he omitted the use of this instrument - most probably for practical reasons - and instead of the (revised) harmonium solo he let the pianist take over. So the piece could now be performed by three players.

To the best knowledge of the contributor, Rachmaninov is the only Russian Romantic composer who used the harmonium in a major classical work. Amongst other Slavic composers only Dvořák dared to use this 'unpopular' instrument in chamber music, namely his »Bagatelles« op. 47 'for two violins, cello and harmonium (or piano)', although this work seems to have been more often performed on the piano than on harmonium.

Rachmaninov's theme in 'Quasi Variazione' is on the one hand a melodical allusion to Tchaikovsky's Trio op. 50, on the other hand the composer refers to it as the 'yearning motive' in his own symphonic poem »The Rock« (op. 7).

Lars David Kellner plays Dvořák

For all that it matters, Antonin Dvorák (1841-1904) wrote his 8 Humoresques for solo piano in 1894 and they were published as his Op. 101. But, for all intents and purposes, he may as well have written only one, the seventh in G flat major, because not only has it far exceeded the others in popularity, it quickly became known throughout the world in countless arrangements as "Dvorák's Humoresque." With its lightly skipping, instantly memorable melody over gently rolled chords, plus chromatic cadences in the outer sections and a sometimes happy, sometimes sad melody. Dvorák's Humoresque in G flat major is delightful, charming, and unforgettable. (J. Leonard)

Lars David Kellner plays John Cage

John Cage had already gained a reputation as a leading figure of the avant-garde when he wrote »Dream« in 1948. This was near the end of a period during which he wrote prolifically for modern dancers. The music consists of groups of pitches that are allowed to resonate (either by holding the keys down or by using the sustaining pedal); the degree of resonance of the performing instrument determines the rhythmic flow of the piece. Foreshadowing later developments in Cage's aesthetic, »Dream« creates for the listener an otherworldly sense of time suspension. (allmusic.com)
